Warning-light color restrictions

A qualifying company or commercial vehicle does not need agency authorization merely to use a warning-light color that the law permits for that type of work. The restriction is primarily the color, vehicle use, and when the light is activated.

• ✓Michigan commercial use: amber is generally the permitted warning color for qualifying utility, refuse, service, towing, rural delivery, snow-removal, security, oversize-load escort, military, agricultural, and similar listed work vehicles. It may be activated only under the conditions allowed for that vehicle and work.
• ✓Ohio commercial use: amber is generally the permitted warning color for qualifying road-service, towing, waste-collection, rural-mail, highway-maintenance, and similar listed special-purpose vehicles while performing the qualifying work.
• ✓Restricted colors: blue and combinations containing blue are reserved for qualifying law-enforcement use. Red and red-and-white are restricted to the emergency, public-safety, school-bus, physician, wrecker, or other narrow uses allowed by the applicable state. White warning lights may be used only in an authorized combination. Green is limited to specified Michigan government, highway, spill-response, or fire-service uses. Purple or amber is limited to qualifying funeral-procession use.
• ✓Prohibited for ordinary use: flashing, oscillating, or rotating warning lights of any color when the vehicle and work do not fall within a statutory exception. Ordinary turn signals and hazard lights are not affected.

Construction and commercial lighting

For construction, utility, roadside, snow-removal, towing, and service vehicles, Downey Enterprise generally limits warning strobes to amber and installs steady white work or scene lights on separate controls.

• ✓Michigan: qualifying work vehicles may use amber warning lights. Front-facing traffic-hazard lamps may flash white, amber, or a shade between them when the equipment, placement, pattern, visibility, and use comply with MCL 257.698a. Rear-facing traffic-hazard lamps are limited to amber, red, or a shade between them under that section.
• ✓Ohio: qualifying construction, highway-maintenance, road-service, towing, and similar vehicles are expressly permitted to use amber warning lights while performing the qualifying work. Amber-and-white flashing lightbars do not receive the same general commercial authorization.
• ✓White scene, cargo, and work lights are treated separately from warning strobes. They must be aimed, controlled, and used without unlawful glare or the appearance of restricted emergency lighting.
• ✓A commercially available amber-and-white strobe kit is not automatically road legal. Flashing white modules will be accepted only when the specific vehicle configuration and intended use comply with the applicable law.

Installation policy

For qualifying commercial amber-light work, Downey Enterprise will confirm the vehicle type and intended business use rather than require department or agency authorization. Restricted public-safety colors and equipment require proof that the customer, vehicle, and intended use fall within the applicable legal exception.

False, altered, stolen, expired, misleading, or unauthorized documents or representations will result in refusal or cancellation of service and may be reported to the affected organization or appropriate authorities.

Out of scope

Heavy apparatus, heavy commercial trucks, large fleet equipment, structural modifications, restraint systems, airbag areas, high-voltage propulsion systems, restricted public-safety equipment, and projects outside verified equipment or insurance capability will be declined or referred.

Consistency for multiple vehicles

Projects involving several smaller vehicles can use a repeatable specification so equipment location, controls, circuit protection, labeling, and service access remain consistent.
